Can I continue to play sports and wear a gum shield while I have braces.
Yes you can participate in all sports with braces – even rugby, boxing and martial arts.
If you participate in contact sports you should wear a mouthguard.
Standard mouthguards will not fit with fixed appliances so you need a special orthodontic mouthguard which is available at the surgery and costs €20.
Some sports shops also stock orthodontic mouthguards which are suitable for use with braces.
